Best dairy Sri Lanka products

What does it mean to you when you see the date printed on the package of milk?

There is no commonly used method worldwide to give the identical meaning about this date on the package, as laws and regulations differ from country to country with regard to the terminology used. However, if the date is with the word “sell by”, it is for the attention of the grocery store whereas, the word “best buy” is for the attention of the consumer.

As consumers, we can follow to some good practices to ensure that milk and cheese we purchase will be in the best quality and safe for consumption. Some examples are:

Milk

Collect milk and other dairy products in Sri Lanka as the last items from the grocery store to ensure that they stay as cool as possible until you reach home. Immediately after reaching home, store milk in the refrigerator at 40° F or below. It is better to store milk in the rear part of the refrigerator, which is the coldest.

As long as the pack is sealed, the product remains fresh. Therefore, stay as long as possible to open the pack after it is purchased.

Cheese

Wrap cheese tightly in a plastic wrap before storing, to prevent air and moisture embracing the surface of cheese. Aromatic or sweet smelling cheeses should be in firmly sealed containers.

It is not harmful if fungus appears on natural, hard, block cheese. Simply remove fungus by cutting off at least one inch area around the fungi spot.

Finally your nose is the best judge. Don’t drink if milk or any other dairy products smells spoiled. If it is in doubt throw away.
